Speaking of summer in Kyoto, it is the Gion festival. We experienced Gion festival July 16 on a school excursion. Many “Yamahokos” decorated with arts and crafts, they are even described “Mobile Art Museums”. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see Yamahoko Junko parade, but we felt old history of Japan by seeing “Yamahokos”.
The Gion festival(Kyoto, Yasaka Shrine) is held every year in the middle of July. The highlights of the festival are the parade of decorated festival floats over 6-meters tall, playing music from their upper floors, and also the festivvities during the evenings before the parade. These floats are so gorgeous that they are sometimes even described as “Mobile Art Museums”.
